I've owned and cared for a lot of horses in my career so inevitably gone through many blankets. I have experience with each and every one of the brands below and have given my top picks in each category.
Winter Blankets
Unless you live in a climate with sun all year round you're going to want to find yourself a good waterproof turnout blanket, one that you can turn your horse out in and not worry about them being exposed to bad weather. Here are my favorite blankets, all based on experience.
Horseware Ireland Rambo Supreme
If you want the best available winter blanket for your horse this is it. Yes, they're expensive, but these are top-quality horse blankets and they take a beating year after year.
Every detail of this blanket is focused on durability while keeping your horse comfortable. Its breathable material is shine-enhancing, anti-static, and has an anti-bacterial lining.
Pros: The absolute best winter blanket on the market
Cons: Pricey, so not for everyone
Bucas Irish Turnout Blanket Extra 300g
Bucas are an excellent alternative to Horseware, they're known for their durability but the ones I've had fit really well and keep your horse nice and warm in adverse weather.
This one is designed with shoulder darts so is perfect for horses with big shoulders, and has a breathable silk-feel lining. If my Rambo rugs ever die I wouldn't hesitate to replace them with a Bucas such as this one.
Pros: Excellent value, durable, well designed
Cons: Hard to criticize, not as stylish as the Rambo
Rain Sheets
WeatherBeeta Plus Dynamic DAN Lite
This is an excellent blanket for the price, especially if you're not quite prepared to spend top dollar on Horseware's best models. I actually only own one of these, it's been around for a few years now and there's hardly a stitch out of place. It keeps the horse that wears it dry and warm and has been very durable.
Pros: Fits really well, lots of shoulder room
Cons: No issues with it yet
Saxon 1200D Standard Neck Lite Turnout
If you're looking for something a bit cheaper this actually isn't a bad blanket for the price. It fit the horse I used it on pretty well and kept him dry when the rain came. The front buckles were the first thing to break but by then it was a few years old.
Pros: Good value if you're on a budget
Cons: Don't expect it to last like the more expensive brands.
Stable Blankets
Amigo Insulator Stable Blanket
I've had at least two of these blankets as stable sheets and for the price, you get a great blanket that fits well and is nice and durable.
Amigo is a brand that I'll be buying more of when some of my other cheaper blankets are past their best. They may not be as cheap as say Shedrow or Saxon but for just a few more dollars you'll get a nice blanket for your horse that should last you a few years at least.
This model is made with durable polyester, is breathable, and has a shine-enhancing polyester lining.
Pros: Perfect balance of quality and price
Cons: Still might be a little pricey for some
The Original Baker Sheet
These light stable blankets have been around for a long time and can still keep up with the more modern brands. I have one tucked away only because it doesn't fit my horse but it's such a solid horse blanket I'll probably never part with it.
The fleece wither protection is a nice touch, as is the satin-lined shoulder to prevent rubbing.
Pros: Classic design, tried and trusted brand
Cons: Older style is not to everyone's taste
Coolers
Rambo Airmax Cooler
This is the cooler my stallion lives in when we go to shows. I've mentioned before that he hates wearing blankets but this one he finds very comfortable and after three years of use he hasn't attempted to shred it yet.
It looks really smart for his hand walks at the shows (hay and shavings don't really stick to it), is great for use in warm and cooler temperatures, and the material has held up really well despite his destructive tendencies and multiple wash cycles.
Pros: Stunning cooler, comfortable for your horse
Cons: No complaints, expensive but worth it.
Bucas Power Cooler
This is a really nice cooler for everyday use, it's also my backup when the Rambo Airmax is getting washed, or if I've just bathed my horse and need a different cooler on him until he dries.
It's really lightweight so is easy to pack for shows and doesn't take up much room if you have a tack locker at home, it also has cross surcingles so you can leave your horse alone with it on.
Pros: Really nice light cooler.
Cons: I wouldn't leave it on your horse overnight in cool weather.
Fly Sheets
I have no problem using some of the cheaper brands of horse blankets but I've found that it's very hard to get a nicely fitted fly sheet so be careful which one you choose for your horse. The neck covers in particular I have found to be badly fitting with some models.
Rambo Protector
Aside from being really well designed and fitting superbly, these fly sheets are tough. My stallion, who hates practically every blanket I put on him has tried and failed to destroy this thing. He's had it three years now and although it's suffered some war wounds it's still perfectly usable. For this reason alone I feel like it might just be a one-time purchase for a regular horse as it would probably last a lifetime.
The hood fits really well, the self-repairing material is really handy, and the protection including belly is excellent. It has a silky lining in vulnerable areas to prevent rubbing, including the tail cover.
Pros: It might just be indestructible, nice roomy fly sheet
Cons: A little pricey, but it'll last a long time
Rambo Flybuster Vamoose
I've been through enough ill-fitting flimsy fly sheets to know not to bother with some models, although a lot of the time it's the neck covers that don't fit well, so I stopped buying those other brands a while ago.
This is one that I've used in the past that really held up great, I simply don't use it now because it's too small for my present horse. The coverage is outstanding and it fits really well, the horse I had it on really liked to move and play hard but had no issues with it.
Pros: Great sturdy fly sheet, neck cover fits well.
Cons: Very little to complain about, although I don't think it'll outlast the Protector
